AI4Europe is a Horizon Europe-funded project focused on enhancing the AI-on-Demand (AIoD) Platform. It aims to serve as an “enabling engine” to make the AIoD Platform a leading source for AI knowledge, services, and tools. The project seeks to foster an Ecosystem of Excellence, accelerate AI solution adoption, extend the existing ecosystem for research, academic, and innovation communities, and support SMEs. It will provide interoperable services, data, and tools to enhance research productivity, reproducibility, and collaboration, aiming to reduce fragmentation in the European AI landscape and facilitate technology transfer from research to business
The METRICS project consists of the organisation of robotics competitions in four priority areas identified by the European Commission: health, agri-food, inspection and maintenance of infrastructure and agile production. METRICS is designed to organise competitions as reproducible and objective evaluation campaigns and aims to structure in a sustainable way the European robotics and Artificial Intelligence (AI) community around the four priority areas.
SmartAgriHubs is a project under the Horizon 2020 instrument that brings together a consortium of well over 164 partners in the European agri-food sector. The project aims to realise the digitization of European agriculture by fostering an agricultural innovation ecosystem dedicated to excellence, sustainability and success.
Human Brain Project (HBP) is a Horizon 2020 FET Flagship, which strives to accelerate the fields of neuroscience, brain inspired computing, AI, and brain-related medicine. This acceleration will achieved by strategic alignment of scientific research programmes in fundamental neuroscience, advanced simulation and multi-scale modelling with the construction of an enabling Research Infrastructure. The aim is to engage the society in social, ethical, legal and cultural issues arising from the research and technological developments in HBP.
LIFEBOTS-Exchange is a H2020 MSCA-RISE Action that is creating a knowledge hub of universities, SMEs, and technology workers that work with social robots in health and care settings. The project has 13 partners in 10 countries. This project supports research and staff exchanges between all project partners.
The AAL project eWare “Early Warning (by lifestyle monitoring) Accompanies Robotics Excellence” is focused on improving the lifestyle of people with dementia and their caregivers considering the extreme impact of this disease in the world. Caring for a person with dementia (PwD) can be a significant personal and emotional challenge for informal carers. Several technologies and services have been developed to support the care for people with dementia and eWare also integrates lifestyle monitoring with social robotics.
The World Wide Views citizen consultation provides decision-makers with a unique insight into the global public opinion on complex governance issues that are debated and negotiated at global venues, such as the UN. The World Wide View method has been used in projects on: Climate and Energy, Bio-diversity and Global Warming.
The main objective of TRINITY is to create a network of multidisciplinary and synergistic local digital innovation hubs (DIHs) composed of research centers, companies, and university groups that cover a wide range of topics that can contribute to agile production: advanced robotics as the driving force and digital tools, data privacy and cyber security technologies to support the introduction of advanced robotic systems in the production processes.
The RODIN project is a pan-European network of networks aiming to bring together European Digital Innovation Hubs (DIHs) in robotics. RODIN helps robotics DIH networks to cooperate and strengthen the competitiveness of the European robotics market. RODIN coordinates activities that are considered important for market segments with a potential of robotization: Healthcare, Agile Production, Infrastructure Inspection and Maintenance, and Agri-food.
The AI4EU project was established to build the first European Artificial Intelligence On-Demand Platform and Ecosystem with the support of the European Commission under the H2020 programme. AI4EU mobilises the whole European AI ecosystem and unites 79 partners in 21 countries in a network across Europe and will provide access to relevant AI resources in the EU for all users.
The overall objective of INBOTS is to create a community hub that can bring together experts to debate and create a responsible research and innovation paradigm for robotics. To this end, INBOTS provides a platform to establish a working synergy between four pillars that covers all stakeholders in Interactive Robotics: the technical expertise pillar, the business expertise pillar, the ethical, legal and socioeconomic expertise pillar, as well as the end-users, policy makers and general public pillar.
SIENNA is a three and a half year project with 11 core partners and 2 associate partners, focussing on ethical and human rights challenges posed by human genomics, human enhancement and human-machine interaction technologies such as robots and smart devices.
The agROBOfood project aims to accelerate the sector’s digital transformation through the adoption of robotic technologies. REELER will offer proactive steps towards ethical and responsible robots by suggesting radical changes in current robot design procedures. Moreover, REELER will formulate guidelines in the REELER Roadmap for distributed responsibility among roboticists, users/affected stakeholders and policy-makers by closing the current gap between these.
The European Robotics Research Infrastructures Network (TERRINet) project aims at building a world-class network with harmonised services and complementary capabilities where talented researchers from academia and industry worldwide will have access and will be able to explore new ideas and establish personal and joint projects; to get in contact with and be inspired by leading and creative scientists, technologists, experts and industrial representatives; to share information and gain knowledge for boosting their scientific research and potential for technological innovation.
DIH^2 is a network of 26 DIHs, with a target to reach over 170 DIHs. The sole aim of the network is to spark incremental (cut 50% cost of advance robotics solutions, double the growth of robotics market) and disruptive (maximum productivity & optimum agility) innovations in over 300,000 Manufacturing SMEs and Mid-Caps. It will support SMEs in their Agile Production challenge (50% increase in productivity) and unleash their digitalization potential by enabling robot solutions that are more cost effective at lower lot sizes.
CoRoSect forms a novel integrated cognitive robotic ecosystems where the repetitive but also cognitively and physically demanding tasks requiring increased manual effort or continuous human supervision during the insects’ lifecycle, are replaced by automatic robotic-based procedures which will also draw upon research performed on understanding biological, technical and economic requirements of insect rearing and optimizing all involved processes.
FlexiGrobots is an Innovation Action aiming to build a platform for flexible heterogeneous multi-robot systems for intelligent automation of precision agriculture operations, providing multiple benefits to farmers around the world.
The aim of the ROSE challenge is to encourage the development of innovative solutions / autonomous robotics for intra-row weed control in order to reduce, or even eliminate, the use of herbicides. The four successful projects following the request for proposals issued by the ANR (French National Research Agency) in June 2017 are competing against each other during the challenge, which is funded by the AFB and organised by the LNE/Irstea consortium.
RoboCom++ will gather the community and organise the knowledge necessary to rethink the design principles and fabrication technologies of future robots. RoboCom++ will aim at developing the cooperative robots (or Companion Robots) of the year 2030, by fostering a deeply multidisciplinary, transnational and federated effort. RoboCom++ will pursue a radically new design paradigm, grounded in the scientific studies of intelligence in nature. Simplification mechanisms will be based on the concepts of embodied intelligence, morphological computation, simplexity, and evolutionary and developmental approaches.
AI4Media project aspires to establish a centre of excellence and a wide network of researchers across Europe and beyond. Its focus will be on delivering the next generation of core AI advances to serve the key sector of media, making sure that European values surrounding ethical and trustworthy AI are embedded in future AI deployments.
SENSE-GARDEN is an AAL project that designed and tested an immersive that combined digital and physical objects to improve the care and well-being of people with major neurocognitive disorders and their caregivers. In the space photos, videos, music and scents connected with the person’s life story that strengthen the awareness by providing stimuli to the different senses, such as sight, touch, hearing, balance and smell. The project concluded in November 2020 and the project partners are continuing to engage in research and collaboration. There are currently operating SENSE-GARDENs in Norway, Belgium, Portugal, and Romania.
ACROBA project aims to develop and demonstrate a novel concept of cognitive robotic platforms based on a modular approach able to be smoothly adapted to virtually any industrial scenario applying agile manufacturing principles. The novel industrial platform will be based on the concept of plug-and-produce, featuring a modular and scalable architecture which will allow the connection of robotic systems with enhanced cognitive capabilities to deal with cyber physical systems (CPS) in fast-changing production environments.
CANOPIES goal is to develop a novel collaborative human-robot paradigm addressing the challenges of Human Robot Interaction and Human-Robot Collaboration in the unstructured highly dynamic outdoor environment of permanent crop farming (Agri-Food Area). Our approach will be demonstrated through an integrated system composed by farming robots and logistics robots with a real-world validation of two economically relevant agronomic operations within a table-grape vineyard: harvesting and pruning.
DARKO sets out to realize a new generation of agile production robots that have energy-efficient elastic actuators to execute highly dynamic motions; are able to operate safely within unknown, changing environments; are easy (cost-efficient) to deploy; have predictive planning capabilities to decide for most efficient actions while limiting associated risks; and are aware of humans and their intentions to smoothly and intuitively interact with them.
The DrapeBot project aims at human-robot collaborative draping, where the robot assists during the transport of the large material patches and drapes the areas of low curvature, while the human deals with high-curvature regions.
FELICE aspires to design the next generation assembly processes required to address urgent needs in manufacturing. It unites multidisciplinary research in robotics, AI, computer vision, data analytics, process optimization and ergonomics to deliver a modular platform capable to integrate and harmonize an array of autonomous and cognitive technologies aiming to increase the agility and productivity of an assembly production system and also ensure the safety and physical and mental well-being of human workers.
Harmony will enable robust, flexible and safe autonomous mobile manipulation robots for use in human-centred environments by making fundamental contributions in cognitive mechatronic technologies. Harmony’s targeted application area is assistive healthcare robotics, which is motivated by the mounting pressure on our healthcare system due to factors such as Europe’s ageing population. Harmony’s current robotic automation solutions only offer “islands of automation” where either mobility or manipulation is dealt with in isolation.
ODIN aspires to fill this gap by bringing technology from the latest ground breaking research in the fields of a) collaborating robots and human robot collaborative workplaces b) autonomous robotics and AI based task planning c) mobile robots and reconfigurable tooling, d) Digital Twins and Virtual Commissioning and e) Service Oriented Robotics Integration and Communication Architectures.
ROBS4CROPS will tackle technical challenges by creating a robotic farming solution that consists of three elements: smart implements, autonomous vehicles, and the farming controller. Existing agricultural implements and tractors will be upgraded so that they can function, together with existing agricultural robots, as parts of a robotic system. Development and testing will take place in real farming environments (real operating conditions), in four countries, in iterative cycles, and in close collaboration with stakeholders.
SESAME combines five end- user-led use-cases (in the domains of healthcare, agile manufacturing, agri-food, and inspection and maintenance) with R&D competences of partners that have a long track-record in conducting cutting-edge research on robotics, model- based safety, security analysis, validation, and verification, towards the actual delivery of research results characterised by widely-used, sustainable and industrial-strength open-source software.
The objective of TraceBot is to bring verifiable actions to robot manipulation by reasoning over sensor-actor trails in a traceability framework based on digital-twin technology. This entails extending current robot motion planners by the automatic execution of self-checking procedures and creating a semantic trace of the actions performed for reasoning about the correct (in the sense of domain regulations) execution of the production steps. The goal is to create robotic systems able to understand what they perceive and do, to ensure that any manipulation action is verified, so leading to the Audit Trail required in the regulated environment.
The EU-funded ROBOMINERS project is developing a bio-inspired, modular and reconfigurable robot for mining small and difficult-to-access deposits. This prototype robot is powered by a hydraulic drivetrain and artificial muscles to mine underground, underwater and above water via a large diameter borehole. ROBOMINERS will test the prototype’s mining ability and resilience under a range of scenarios. It will demonstrate the new technology’s capability for accessing mineral raw materials from otherwise inaccessible or uneconomic domestic sources.
AGIMUS aims to deliver an open-source breakthrough innovation in AI-powered agile production, introducing solutions that push the limits of perception, planning, and control in robotics, enabling general-purpose robots to be quick to set up, autonomous and to easily adapt to changes in the manufacturing process.
